Release Notes:

Census Geography Column Updates

For release 1.11.2, the Census Geography columns (PLACE, PLACECODE, STATE, STATEFIPS, COUNTY, COUNTYFIPS, MCD, MCDFIPS, CBSA, CBSA_CODE, and CBSATYPE) have been updated with values from Maponics’ 2010 Tiger-based Census Boundaries. Consequently, the values of these attributes for a particular neighborhood may have changed since version 1.11.1.
Glossary

FIPS – “Federal Information Processing Standards”. Simply a unique numbering system used by government agencies. This code allows users to link the map data to other databases.

Place – For most purposes, these can be considered incorporated cities, but do include census designated places, consolidated cities, and incorporated places.

MCD – “Minor Civil Division”, Generically known as “townships”, MCDs include other related census-defined areas and cover the entire US with no holes so every neighborhood is within some MCD. In some states (particularly New England), MCDs are the functioning governing unit. In other states, the MCD name is assigned by the Census Bureau and may not have relevance.

NBR_TYPE – Maponics designates three types of neighborhoods: macro neighborhoods (designated “M”), which are larger areas of a city containing other neighborhoods; neighborhoods (“N”); and sub neighborhoods (“S”), which are smaller neighborhoods within neighborhoods. For some applications, users may want to eliminate these by ignoring those marked “M” or “S”.

Canadian Census Division – Census Divisions are the second-level country divisions beneath the province. These are represented in the County and Countyfips columns.

Canadian Census Subdivision – Census subdivisions generally correspond to the municipalities of Canada. Municipal status is defined by laws in effect in each province and territory in Canada. These are represented in the Place and Placecode columns.
